Scapegoat Carnivale Presents THE BACCHAE, Oct 11-20

Scapegoat Carnivale presents THE BACCHAE, October 11-20, 2012 at the Centaur Theatre Company, a new translation by Andreas Apergis and Joseph Shragge, directed by Andreas Apergis, new translation by Andreas Apergis & Joseph Shragge, original music by Brian Lipson, and musical direction by David Oppenheim.

Scapegoat Carnivale Theatre returns to Brave New Looks for the third time after winning the MECCA for Best Production for Medea, which debuted to sold-out audiences at Centaur Theatre.

First performed in 405 BC, The Bacchae is Euripides’ last play and greatest accomplishment. Scapegoat Carnivale’s adaptation/translation of the classic Greek tragedy is set during the Second Great Awakening, an ecstatic religious revival that took place in a field in Cane Ridge, Kentucky in 1801. For six days, awe-struck locals witnessed over twenty-five thousand converts falling over, barking, singing, and making love. The revival’s legacy was the formation of many North American Christian denominations (Mormons, Baptists, Shakers, and Pentecostals) prevalent in Canada and the US. Translated from the Greek by Andreas Apergis and Joseph Shragge, who also translated Medea.

Scapegoat Carnivale was founded in 2006 by actor/director Alison Darcy, playwright Joseph Shragge, and actor/stage manager Melanie St. Jacques. In 2007, the three were joined by actor/director Andreas Apergis and musical director David Oppenheim. Scapegoat Carnivale Theatre is an independent Montreal-based theatre company dedicated to producing new works based on provocative dramaturgical concepts and approaches that aim to steer theatre in unexpected directions. Of special interest to us are plays or texts that mix popular and experimental forms, employ heightened or poetic language and are expressionistic, unsettling or unreal. Our company is made up of writers, actors, directors, stage managers and musicians whose mission it is to experiment with new methods and collaborate with artists and performers from diverse artistic traditions.
Scapegoat is deeply thankful to Centaur Theatre for their continued support and encouragement.

The singers of the choir are: Alison Carpenter, Natalie Howard, Elizabeth Ten-Hove, LIsa Thomas, Pamela Perrotti and Eleanor Young.
