Segal Centre's SAME TIME, NEXT YEAR Begins Previews 4/29

Photo-Flash-Segal-Centres-SAME-TIME-NEXT-YEAR-Begins-Previews-429-20000101

The Segal Centre for Performing Arts and Delmar Freight Forwarders are delighted to close the English theatre season with Bernard Slade's award-winning romantic comedy Same Time, Next Year, a smart and touching story of love through the ages, starring R.H. Thomson and Michelle Giroux and directed by Diana Leblanc. Presented on the Segal Centre Mainstage from April 29th to May 20th, 2012.

On a weekend in 1951, New Jersey accountant George and California housewife Doris meet by chance in a cozy country inn. Indulging in a seemingly innocent fling, they soon realize that they have fallen hopelessly in love. The catch: both are happily married, but not to each other. They decide to re-create their romance for one weekend each year - only one weekend - after that they go back to their lives, their kids, and their spouses. Over the course of a quarter century, George and Doris share their passions, hopes and dreams through the ups and downs of their marriages and shifting American society. A metaphor for the changing moral landscape of post-war United States, Same Time, Next Year is a charming and poignant story that explores the complexities of love and human relationships.

The Segal Centre is thrilled to assemble a distinguished creative team led by director Diana Leblanc. Diana's prolific directing career and strong artistic vision, seen in a number of stage creations across Canada including A View from the Bridge and Harvey at the Segal, ensures a thoughtful and well-crafted production.

Same Time, Next Year unites two shining stars of the Canadian stage: R.H. Thomson and Michelle Giroux. Beloved for his portrayal of Jasper Dale on the popular television series Road to Avonlea, Gemini and Genie-Award winner R.H. Thomson has played lead roles in many of the country's major theatres, and was last seen at the Segal Centre in 2009-2010's season hit Harvey. He will be joined by Stratford-veteran Michelle Giroux who returns to the Segal after her performance in Karoline Leach's Tryst.

Three-time Dora award-winner and president of the Associated Designers of Canada Phillip Silver creates both set and lighting, with costumes by celebrated designer Eo Sharp that chart the changing fashions from the conserative ‘Fifties to the swinging ‘Seventies. Montreal composer Keith Thomas joins the production as composer with projection design by George Allister and Patrick Boivin, collaborators whose dynamic video work was seen in this season's Equus and Scientific Americans.

Described by the New York Times as "the funniest comedy about love and adultery to come to Broadway" Same Time, Next Year was a long-running hit, performed for over three years in its original 1975 staging. Written by Canadian-born stage and television writer Bernard Slade, it was adapted into a successful film in 1978 that starred Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn. Bernard Slade has penned a number of memorable plays such as Tribute (1978) and Romantic Comedy (1979) and is responsible for such television classics as The Flying Nun, The Partridge Family and Bewitched.
Join us for an intimate talk with award-winning theatre designer Phillip Silver for the next edition of CJAD Sunday-@-The Segal on April 29th at 11am. Entrance is free.
